TEAM PARTICIPATION RULES
IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE, FENCERS MUST HAVE COMPETED IN ONE OF THE INDIVIDUAL SOCAL SCHOLASTIC FENCING LEAGUE EVENTS, REGARDLESS OF WEAPON (FOIL, EPEE, OR SABRE #1 OR #2, OR THE NOVICE).
EXEMPTION for League Schools - can field teams of fencers for Varsity B, JV, or middle school, who have not fenced in either Individual events or Novice, as long as they abide by Varsity A rule, as outlined in "Team Level Descriptions" below (meaning they must have competed in one of the individual events). Note: This exemption does NOT apply to Varsity A teams, only to Varsity B, JV, and middle school.
TEAM LEVEL DESCRIPTIONS:
Middle School - For 6th to 8th grade fencers. (Schools can form as many Middle School Teams as desired. Middle school students may not fence on high school teams.)
Varsity A Team â Top 4 Fencers in High School (9th-12th grade). Each School can form one Varsity A Team. Essentially, this is your TOP 3-4 fencers. All Varsity A High School Fencers must have fenced in either/or both the #1 or #2 Individual Events to be considered for a High School Varsity "A" Team for the SoCal Scholastic League Team Tournament. (Only one Varsity A Team per school)
Varsity B Team â Junior or Senior (11th/12th grade) fencers with competition experience, but not at Varsity A Level. Freshman and Sophomore fencers with more than 2 years experience are eligible. Fencers with A, B, or C ratings are not allowed to fence in this event (Division 3 = D rating and below). (Schools can form as many Varsity B teams.)
Junior Varsity (JV) Team â For UNRATED fencers who are Freshmen and Sophomores (9th /10th) with 1 to 2 years competitive experience or Juniors/Seniors (11th/12th) with little with 1 to 2 years competitive experience. Fencers with A, B, or C ratings are not allowed to fence in this event (Division 3 = D rating and below). (Schools can form as many JV Teams.)
In the event of more than four fencers from a team having a rating of 'A''B' or 'C' then the lowest rated fencer may have a waiver to fence in Var B.
Any variance -- the coach can request an exception for a rated fencer to fence down a level with petition approved by coaches present at the Team Tournament.
Variance only applies to League Schools.

************************************************************
FORMAT: Teams are made up of 3 fencers with 1 alternate fencer (optional). Teams of 2 fencers will forfeit bouts due to 3rd fencer missing. Teams will fence the best of 9 five-point bouts. Events with 4 or fewer teams will fence a round robin. Events with 5 or more teams will fence a pool followed by direct elimination for top 8 teams. Teams will fence off for 1st through 3rd places.
************************************************************
EQUIPMENT:
A full fencing Jacket (FIE not required), a plastron, a glove, and fencing knickers. Socks must cover all the leg not covered by the knickers. Women's equipment must include breast protectors made of metal or rigid material inside the jacket. Please wear shoes with "non-marking" or white soles to all competitions.
All saber fencers must use a USFA Fencing approved 800N FIE glove.
The mask used must be appropriate to the weapon being fenced. NOTE to Leon Paul brand MASK owners: If you have the Leon Paul "X-Change" mask with the plastic disk in back, please note that a secondary neck strap is now REQUIRED for all USA Fencing domestic events. The secondary strap requirement will be enforced and non-conforming equipment will be disallowed. (Note: the L.P. X-Change mask model with the more traditional tongue may be worn without the secondary strap.) Please consult your coach or the armorer with any questions.
INSPECTIONS: Mask and gloves will be inspected by the armorer. Weapons will be tested on the strip. You will not be allowed to fence with weapons that do not conform to USFA standards.
