Intro to Coaching Class

$30 clinic. This class will cover basic ideas in coaching, risk management, terminology, individual lessons, warm ups and group lessons. The class will overlap with a practice to give coaches an opportunity to work with students. 10am - 6pm This class will help prepare students and lay groundwork for those who are intending to attend future clinics to develop towards coaching certification. It will also be useful for recreational and assistant coaches, developing coaches, and captains who do some coaching. A Rough Outline of Schedule the post lunch segments will introduce and discuss ideas which will be explored further in the practical portion. Lunch will be included. 10:00 - 10:15 - Arrival 10:15 - 11:00 - Role of a Coach 11:00 - 11:45 - Risk Management 11:45 - 12:30 - Lunch 12:30 - 1:15 - Warm Ups 1:15 - 1:45 - Group Classes 1:45 - 2:30 - Individual Lessons 2:30 - 5:30 - Practicum 5:30 - 6:00 - Review, Conclusion Presenter Bio BJ Swayne has been coaching UMBC's Fencing Team since 2006, and became the head coach in 2008. In 2011 he began coaching TriWeapon Boys Club – the longest running non-collegiate fencing program in Maryland. In the 2013 season he created a new curriculum for UMBC, and began a winning streak as the curriculum became more broadly implemented the following year. During the six subsequent years BJ has led UMBC to 5 conference titles, the second highest number achieved in the conference during that time, and 12 conference trophies total, the third highest number of placements in the conference during that period. With three foil titles in that period, UMBC has won the foil title more than any other school in that period. BJ's collegiate fencers have brought home 11 individual championship placements in that same six year period. Additionally, one of BJ's students placed top 3 in several National and Regional Korean championships, bringing home several foreign trophies. BJ has had several fencers on regional points lists, including top 16 and top 8 positions. In the 2019-2020 season one of BJ's students, with less than 8 months training, made the top 100 on the Cadet Men's Epee National Points list, and then maintained his position the following season. On the Maryland Division Champion's list BJ's students hold second place in foil, and first and second place in sabre for the 2019-2020 season. 7 out his 13 epee students have Division I ratings, and for the 2020-2021 season one of his epee students took 3rd place in a National Championship. BJ has also developed several coaches, both amateur and professional along with several referees. Preregistration opens on 11/19/2021. Preregistration closes on 12/17/2021.
