Foil and Epee Division II Sharks and Minnows format Western PA Division of the USA Fencing org Sanctioned event Saturday, November 4th

The IUP Fencing Club is proud to announce our second offering of the Sharks and Minnows competition format for our Division II Foil and Epee competition.

So - What is a Sharks and Minnows format? To put it simply, it is a feeding frenzy of Fencing! Two Rounds of Pools! Winners of the first round of pools will be seeded into their own pool - so they will be fencing for the top spots in the DE table against fencers who are performing at their own levels. The rest of the fencers will be placed into the remaining pools to see if they can make the cutoff into the DE tableau of 16.

Pre-Registered

Registration fee: $10.00

Event fees:$35.00

At the door:

Registration Fee: $20.00

Event Fees: $45.00

IUP Is located approximately 75 minutes east of Pittsburgh.

We have sprung wood floors, locker rooms and showers.

For those interested in coming out the night before the competition, there is a (relatively) new Hilton Garden Inn approximately 1000 feet from the venue.

There is a GOOD coffee house (Commonplace Coffee) about two blocks away that sells coffee and light sandwiches/baked goods.

Finally, there are a number of nice restaurants along Philadelphia street for after the competition (I recommend the PanAsia Cafe, and Benjamins)

(Even More Information from the Athlete's Handbook)

The Sharks and Minnows format is a USA Fencing recognized competition format which is two rounds of pools, followed by a direct elimination tableau.

The first round of pools is seeded per normal USA Fencing tournament standards.

Example (Fencers A-Q, seeded in order)

Pool 1: A, F, G, L, M, R

Pool 2: B, E, H, K, N, Q

Pool 3: C, D, I, J, O, P

The second round of pools contains two types, the “shark” and “minnow” pools. The shark pool is the top-seeded fencers to come out of the first round.

Example (Fencers A-Q, seeded in order)

“Sharks”

Pool 1: A, B, C, D, E, F

“Minnows”

Pool 2: G, J, K, N, O, R

Pool 3: H, I, L, M, P, Q

In the interests of time management, the DE tableau will be cut to the table of 16. The participants of the “shark” pool are guaranteed the top seeds, which will be based on their second round pool performance. The remaining spots are based on the results of the minnow pools. The resulting DE tableau is fenced as normal until a single winner remains.

Example (Top 16 promoted):

A (1) v. P (16)

B (2) v. N (15)

C (3) v. M (14)

G (7) v. J (10)

H (8) v. I (9) Q, R not promoted
