Don Appling Legacy Open Hawaii Aloha Fencers! Join us September 14th 2019, at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The Appling Legacy Open Hawaii (ALOHA) fencing competition is the USA Fencing Hawaii Division’s annual tribute to the late Don Appling, his exemplary life, spirit, and dedication to fencing. Throughout his career Lt Col Donald Appling served in all three branches of the military and it was little surprise that he also excelled in all weapons of fencing. His unparalleled competitive fencing career spanned over 70 years, inspiring young and old. Beginning this year, we would like to extend our invitation to all fencers age 13 and over to compete and honor Don’s lifelong commitment to the sport. Two events will be contested, senior mixed foil and senior mixed epee. Both events will be fenced as a single round of pools, 100% promoted to direct-elimination, no fence-off for third. Medals will be awarded to the top 4 finishers. A point based system will determine the combined overall winner for the open as well as the combined overall winner for the veteran events. Winners will have their name engraved in a perpetual trophy. This year’s event will take place on the deck of the legendary Battleship Missouri in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on September 14th, 2019. An homage to Don’s service to the nation and his love of fencing. We invite all fencers to come, participate and celebrate in this historic sport event. Don’s spirit will be with us.
