The New Jersey Division Denise O'Connor RYC -Region 3- Youth Championship Fencing biography of honoree Denise O'Connor: http://usfencinghalloffame.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=96&Itemid=52 A two-time Olympian, (1964, 1976), she fenced in five World Championships (1965, '66, '69, '70, '75), as well as the Pan American Games of 1975(Bronze Medal). She was the winner of the 1971 Terre des Hommes in Montreal. For nearly two decades, she was a nationally ranked women's foilist (1959-1976). She captained the Salle Santelli Women's Foil Team to five national titles. She was also a 3-time chair of the New Jersey Division, coach of Brooklyn College for over a decade at Brooklyn College before becoming Assistant Director of Athletics. In 1975 and '76, she was NIWFA College Coach of the Year. Her students have become champions and successful coaches in their own right. In all Y10 events, fencers must use blades that are 30" or 32". Weapon length will be tested prior to competition. Birth Years: Youth 10: 2007-2010 Youth 12: 2005-2008, or on Youth 10 NRP List Youth 14: 2003-2006, or on Youth 12 NRP List A fencer may compete in the next higher age bracket if on the current National Points List, i.e. a fencer on the current Y12 points list may fence Y14. If your entry is rejected for age, contact us and we will handle your entry. Format: One round of pools followed by 100% to Direct Elimination (DE's). Y10 DE's are 10 points, Y12 and Y14 are regular 15 point DE's. If there are insufficient fencers in a Men's or Women's event, we reserve the right to run the event as mixed and/or to vary the competition format to include an extra round of pools. If men's and women's events are combined, there will be separate awards to the top men and the top women based on their placement in the mixed event. There will be no fence off for third place in any event. Custom designed New Jersey Division engraved medals will be awarded for 1st through 8th place for each event. Initial seeding by National Youth Points within Classification/Classification/Year. All fencers must wear full fencing attire. That means sweat pants are NOT permitted. Underarm protectors (plastrons), breast protectors for women and long socks are required. Fencers must bring at least two weapons and two body cords that meet USFA requirements. There are no exceptions to the attire and equipment rules. A mask, lame and body cord check will be conducted. A major equipment vendor will be on-site during the tournament. US Fencers: You must have a valid USFA membership or join the USFA at the event. Fencers from Canada, Mexico and Other Countries: You must have and show a current FIE license, Current CFF Membership, or Current USFA membership to participate. Entry Fees: On time registration will be $50 per event. The late registration fee will start on April 14 and will be $100 per event. Online entry at the $100 rate will be available through April 18. After April 18, fencers can register at the door at for $150 per event. There are no exceptions to this policy. Fencers are considered registered when their names appear on the "Who's Preregistered?" list on the askFred listing for this tournament. You are not registered if your name appears as "incomplete" in this listing. Refunds: Refund requests must be received by April 14. Use the email the organizer link. Refund checks are mailed after the tournament. Information below provided by USA Fencing: RYC tournaments are held throughout the season, similar to the Super Youth Circuit tournaments. There are no national points awarded at Regional Youth competitions. These competitions are one of the possible qualification paths for Youth 10 and Youth 12 events at both the March NAC and the Y10, Y12 and Y14 USA Fencing National Championships. A Regional Ranking Point System (RRPS) is in place to recognize participation and accomplishment of developing athletes at the regional level and beginning in the 2014-2015 season will serve as a qualification path in Y12 and Y14 to the Summer National Championships. Rankings will be managed by the National Office and available for viewing on the USA Fencing Website under Rankings, Current Rankings, Regional. These rankings are regional only and ARE NOT RELATED IN ANY WAY TO THE NATIONAL ROLLING POINT STANDINGS. All athletes who have fenced at an RYC will earn points based on placement. Larger fields will award more points for placement. At the end of the season, ranking winners of each age group and gender in each of the 6 youth regions will be recognized by the YDC and US Fencing. Youth NAC: Y10 and Y12 fencers must participate in at least one RYC or SYC tournament prior to the regular registration deadline for the March/April Youth NAC in order to be considered eligible to compete. RYCs that take place before the Youth NAC but after the regular registration deadline will NOT be considered for meeting eligibility requirement for the Youth NAC. Y14 registration for this NAC is open and has no pre-tournament requirements.
