The students of the Rice Fencing club are proud to host the 2017 Van Buskirk Memorial tournament to honor Harold Van Buskirk and his contribution to Rice and Texas fencing. Venue Rice University Gibbs Recreation and Wellness Center 6100 Main St, Houston, TX 77005 A map of the campus is available at http://www.rice.edu/maps/maps.html. The venue is building 26. Parking is available in the Central Garage (across the street, indoor) or any of the outdoor lots. Parking is $12/day. Event Schedule: Saturday January 14, 2017 9:00am.....Senior Mixed Epee 10:00am....C & Under Senior Mixed Foil 10:30am....Senior Mixed Saber 1:30pm.....Senior Mixed Random Team Saber Sunday January 15, 2017 10:30am.....Senior Mixed Foil 11:00am....C & Under Mixed Epee 1:30pm.....C & Under Mixed Saber Mixed Random Team Saber: The purpose of this event is to foster comradery and allow fencers to compete with others they may not normally fence with. Saber fencers of all experience levels are encouraged to register. Everyone who registers for the Random Team Saber event will be randomly placed into teams (rated fencers will be balanced as fairly as possible). Pools will be best 2 of 3, 5 touch bouts between teams (A vs A fencers, B vs B etc.). Teams will then proceed to a bracketed tournament and fence standard 45 touch team bouts. In the event we have an uneven number of fencers, some teams may be given a 4th alternate fencer. In the spirit of the event we ask teams to give everyone as much fencing time as possible, but it will be up to the teams how to substitute. This will be an unsanctioned event and no ratings will be awarded. Registration limited to 18 fencers. PARTICIPANT INFORMATION Participation is limited to fencers whose USFA membership status can be verified. Fencers who's status cannot be confirmed either here or through the national office will NOT be allowed to compete. USFA membership will be available at the day of the tournament. You can visit the USFA webpage (http://www.usfencing.org/page/show/698115-individuals) to renew your membership online. Minors (under 18) must have a Waiver signed by their Parent or Guardian when checking in. Age Criteria: The USFA Board of Directors has ruled that for any USFA competition that is not specific to an age group, an athlete must be at least 13 years old as of January 1 of the fencing season. The exemption to this rule applies to any fencer who is younger than 13 on January 1 but who is listed on the latest National Junior Point standings; then that fencer is allowed to compete in the USFA competitions not specific to an age group. The athlete must meet any other criteria stated for that competition. Examples of such non-specific competitions are: "Open", "Unclassified", "A" competitions, "C" or under competitions, Team competitions of any category unless specified for juniors or similar age restricted category. EQUIPMENT CHECKS All events will be fenced electrically. Equipment checks will consist of gloves, masks, body cords and lamés. Sabre cuffs, underarm protectors, fencing knickers and any and all safety equipment per USFA regulations are REQUIRED. Preregistration opens on 11/07/2016. Preregistration closes on 01/12/2017.
