The Virginia Division Fall Referee Clinic is being hosted at NOVA Fencing Club and taught by FIE Referee Peter Burchard.

Are you a competitive fencer? or a parent who wants to understand more about the rules? want to make extra money as a referee?

Any of those reasons are a good reason to join our referee clinic with past USA Fencing President and current Board Member, Peter Burchard. Learn how to referee on Saturday, December 18 followed by a practical exam on Sunday, December 19 when you will be the referees at our Division 2, Santa' Revenge tournament.

Burchard is a former FIE rated referee before aging out, and currently holds a Foil and Epee 1, and a Saber 4 from USA Fencing. He has refereed 3 times at the NCAA Finals. Burchard is well known for his work building up the fencing community through grass roots level education of coaches and referees. Maestro Burchard is also a 3-weapon Matre d' Armes (fencing master), the highest rating a coach can receive.

Division 2 Fencing tournaments are for fencers who are rated "C" and under, who are 13 years old or older. Sign up today for either the tournament or the referee clinic on askFred.net

About the Referee Development Clinic
The Referee Development Clinic will provide you with a broad understanding of the role, responsibilities, and duties of a referee, as well as refine your sense of right of way, timing, and application of the penalties.

Attending an official FOC-sanctioned clinic is a prerequisite for becoming a certified USA Fencing referee, along with successful completion of a written exam. Once a passing score (90%) has been achieved on the written exam (both the general section and one or more weapon-specific sections) a referee receives a rating of "P" in each weapon passed. Further ratings improvements (1-10) can be obtained at a later date by being evaluated in a practical setting at tournaments. Please make sure that your USFA Membership is current, the background check is complete and the attendees complete SafeSport program.

Written Exams
The written test is now offered online and typically taken shortly following the clinic, though it may be taken in advance:
http://fencingofficials.org/test/

If you plan to sit the exam, please make sure that you have adequately prepared by going through the Study Guide:

Who should attend
This clinic is recommended for:
- Aspiring referees - who want to learn how right of way and rules are being applied at a national and international level;
- Athletes - who want to improve their games and get a more complete understanding of their sport;
- Coaches - who want to maintain their grasp of current interpretations and rules updates;
- Parents - who want a better understanding of tournament format and the basics of sport fencing for their children; and
- Current referees - who need to fulfill their yearly requirement for seminar attendance or further their personal development.

Proof of Vaccination or Negative COVID Test Required for All Virginia Division Sanctioned Events
Out of concern for the safety of our membership and their families, effective immediately, the Virginia Division of USA Fencing will require proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test for all fencers, parents, volunteers and USFA Professional members for that event to be sanctioned by the Virginia Division.
Confirmation of vaccination or negative COVID test will occur as you walk into the venue. No one without proof will be allowed into the venue at any time, no exceptions.
Negative COVID test results (PCR or Rapid) cannot be more than 72 hours old from the day of the event the fencer is competing in.
Tournament organizers are required to publish this policy, USA Fencing’s venue mask mandate, and any other venue specific requirement in the tournament listing on AskFred at the time the tournament is posted. Any changes to any of the above policies will be communicated to those registered and preregistered by the tournament organizer promptly.
This mandate is a requirement only for events where the Virginia Division of USA Fencing is the sanctioning body. Regional events (ROC’s, R/SYC’s, JRCC’s), North American Cup events and unsanctioned local events will not have this requirement.
Failure to comply with this mandate will result in the un-sanctioning of tournaments and/or the loss of ability to host future tournaments.
Questions regarding this mandate can be made to any VA Division Executive Committee member directly, or by email to info@va-usfa.com.
