This is a Certified Referee Seminar and meets one of the requirements for becoming a certified fencing referee for USA Fencing. This clinic is open to all ages regardless of membership status with USA Fencing.

Practical exams will NOT be held until VA is allow to have fencing competition. Official US Fencing Referee Seminars and Advanced Foil & Sabre coaching clinic Combined by RUSSELL WILSON This course will satisfy your seminar requirement and one of the vital components of becoming a nationally certified referee. Fencers and coaches will also better understand the difficult concepts of executing and defending a game. This will help eliminate confusion of an “Attack”, as recognized internationally in 2020-2021 and a correctly executed counterattack. This is a Certified Referee Seminar and meets one of the requirements for becoming a certified fencing referee for USA Fencing. This clinic is open to all ages regardless of membership status with USA Fencing. This seminar should run 8 hours or more, and a must for any fencer or parent who wants to increase their understanding of the rules of competitive fencing. A Zoom meeting has been setup for those who could not attend in person. Please see the Zoom information below. Seminar Instructors: Russell Wilson is a former chair of the Fencing Officials Commission and was a referee at the 1984, 1988, and 1996 Olympic Games for all three weapons, and one of two living people who refereed the finals in both foil and saber. He is a Certified Referee Instructor (CRI), one of only a handful of people to have held the category “AAA” international referee rating in foil, épée, and saber. Coach Russ holds the rank of "Referee Emeritus" in the United States Fencing Association - this is the highest honor granted a referee. He has served as chair of numerous panels for USA Fencing, and is USA Fencing's Director of Security since 2001. Professionally, Russ is an expert in national security affairs and holds five advanced degrees. In 2010, Russell Wilson was inducted into the USA Martial Arts Hall of Fame. When: Saturday September 5th 2pm – 6pm, & September 6th 10am - 12pm. Limited to the first thirty people in club. Live streamed via the zoom session. Who should attend: 1. For those looking to become referees, this clinic will prepare the attendee for taking the test and for observation as a referee. (No virtual practical, and practical exam will not be livestreamed) 2. The referee who want to improve themselves 3. Fencers who want to learn the seminar content and learn to manage the referee they are assigned. 4. Parents who want to have a better understanding of of calls and the rules of the game.
