Eileen Grench Saber Clinic

The Bay Cup is offering this clinic at no charge. Donations to help defray expenses will be gladly accepted but are not required for participation. We are offering this clinic to provide aspiring young saber fencers with an opportunity to hear Eileen's story: how a local fencer made it to the Olympics! And to hear what she learned on that journey. We hope to help inspire and motivate the clinic athletes as well as provide an opportunity to learn some new drills and train with an Olympian! A big thank you to Sacramento Saber Fencing for offering to host this clinic at no charge! ABOUT EILEEN: Eileen Grench, a Rio 2016 Olympian, has been fencing for nearly 18 years. Eileen grew up in Davis, California and competed in many local Bay Cup events before going on to compete on the World Cup circuit. As a junior, she was a gold medalist in the Budapest Hercules World Cup, ranked 10th in the world, and won multiple NAC and Junior Olympic medals. After high school, she went on to win a Division I National Championship with Ohio State in 2008. She won medals in both the 2007 and 2011 Pan-American Games, and was ranked among the best 25 fencers in the world. In 2016 she represented Panama at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro as the first Panamanian saberist ever to compete in and win an Olympic match. She is now living in New York City, where she continues to fence and pursue her master’s degree at Columbia University’s school of journalism. Eileen will share her experiences, insights, and strategies for competing at the World Cup and Olympic Level. Eileen has taken an unusual road towards success – largely training in California with her longtime coach Alexander Lepeshinski, while balancing work and school. She will share insights also on how to achieve international medals while being successful in academics and in life. The clinic will be targeted for youth-junior saber fencers but is open to all ages and levels. Participants should be able to execute the fundamentals with proficiency. CLINIC OUTLINE 10am - 3pm, with optional open fencing 3pm - 5pm. Doors open 9:30am What Eileen will cover, from Eileen: Intro: My Olympic story. The Big Picture: Training plans and Training cycles. Nutrition and hydration. How to time manage with school. Practice like an Olympian: Footwork, drills & conditioning. What I have learned through training with the best in the world. Tournament Day: The secrets on how to prepare for your big day, handle the setbacks, and be consistent! The Mental Game (A.K.A. Sport psychology) : Seems so mysterious… It really isn’t! You must practice it like any other skill. Open bouting/tournament: I will give personal coaching and feedback throughout. Q & A Session. All elements will be explored both through discussion and drills/situational bouting. I will be participating as well. By the end of the day I hope to have worked with and given personal feedback to all fencers. CLINIC REGISTRATION FEES: NONE! Donations to help defray expenses will be gladly accepted but are not required. The suggested range for donations is $20 - 50.
