FOC Referee Seminar and Hands-On Foil and Sabre Priority Clinic with Matt Cox & Darius Wei October 7-8, 2017 This seminar fulfills the official FOC seminar requirement; participants will be cleared to take both the written and practical referee exams. The material will be delivered in what Matt calls a "lab environment". Participants will not only learn the rules and conventions of fencing, but gain hands-on experience interpreting and discussing live action demonstrations. Discussion of the rules will be informed by Matt and Darius' experiences refereeing, coaching, and fencing at all levels of the sport. Not just for aspiring referees, this seminar will be helpful for athletes, coaches, and parents who want to learn the finer details of refereeing and how they impact the game. Instructors: Matthew Cox is a Certified Referee Instructor from Oxford, NC, and has held international referee licenses in both sabre and epee. Having specialized in sabre refereeing for almost 15 years, Matt has refereed at many Grand Prix and World Cup events, and has been a regular fixture at North American Cups. Matt has also served as a club owner and coach, which informed his collaborative approach to referee education. Darius Wei is the assistant coach in charge of Men's & Women's Foil at Duke University and the Head Foil Coach at Research Triangle Fencing. Athletes who have trained with Darius have consistently demonstrated success, winning National Championships and earning NCAA Championship berths. In addition, Darius has served as a referee in Division 1 NAC and NCAA post-season events.
