Tom Wright Memorial Veteran Fencing Tournament

The Tom Wright Memorial Fencing Tournament is hosted by the Capitol Division in honor of Tom Wright, who fenced sabre at Harvard graduating in 1941. As a youth of 18, while vacationing with his parents, he was challenged to a duel by an Italian nobleman who mistakenly assumed he had designs on a young lady. He won the duel, which was fought with epees. He had a distinguished career as an architect in Washington D.C. and returned to fencing at the NIH club in the 1990's, when he was in his 70's. He went to England on one of the first USA Veteran teams before World Veteran Championships were officially recognized. He was a perfect gentleman whose love of fencing led him to arrange demonstration matches at Washington's Cosmos Club. Medals will be awarded down to 8th place in each weapon, while the top man and woman in each weapon will have their names inscribed on the Tom Wright Memorial trophies. In addition, prizes of wine and chocolate will be awarded to the top four, in the hopes that our medalists will reap the anti-aging benefits of resveratrol and flavonoids and continue to compete for many years to come. This competition is open to fencers who were born in 1972 or earlier. $5.00 registration fee plus $25.00 entry fee per event.
