We are pleased to be celebrating the 30th year of hosting our summer camps! We have one of the finest fencing facilities in the U.S., with 7,000 sq ft of space, 9 strips on a raised wood floor, locker rooms w/ showers, plenty of air-conditioning, armory, and weight training area.
The 2012 Coaching Staff: Camp Director is Maestro Gene Gettler, head coach at AFC and Centennial HS, and SE VP of the United States Fencing Coaches Association. Many of Gettler’s students have become regional and national finalists and champions, including one pupil who made two Olympic Teams. Gene teaches foil, epee, and sabre.
Prevot John Terris ably assists in foil and epee instruction at the Atlanta Fencers Club. John is also the Director of the AFC Fitness and Conditioning Program, and is head coach for the Cherokee Fencing Club, Decatur Fencing Alliance, and the Kennesaw State University Fencing Club.
Moniteur Ed Nolan is a nationally rated Veteran in all 3 weapons. Ed is an assistant coach at the Atlanta Fencers Club.
Anthony DuBose – Instructor in Foil. Among his many accomplishments, he was a U.S. Junior Olympic finalist, NCAA Champion for Penn State, 9th place at Div I Senior Nationals, Southeast Section Foil Champion, and Temple Open Champion.
Laura Gettler – Instructor in Foil, Laura has been fencing for 29 years. Among her competitive accomplishments, Laura is a past Southeast Section Champion, and several times National Finalist in Veteran’s Foil.
Daily group and individual instruction sessions are geared to help both the beginner and experienced fencer strengthen their fundamentals and tactical skills. Group activities emphasize lots of fun while improving your fitness and footwork. Extensive electrical bouting takes place each afternoon, allowing the coaches to give you feedback on your use of techniques and on-strip strategies. Break period activities include review of world class fencers on DVD’s, discussions about rules, tactics, etc, and basic weapons repair.
The camp is held from 9am – 4pm each day. (9am – 1pm for kids ages 6-7) The campers are welcome to stay and fence with the Atlanta Fencers who come in from 5pm – 9pm. We will have a barbecue lunch on Wednesday and a pizza party on Friday. Campers should bring a lunch the other days as well as daily snacks. Sports and soft drinks, and bottled water are available for purchase.
MAESTRO ACADEMY – Coaches interested in improving their teaching skills and working towards USFCA certification will have coaching classes with Maestro Gettler and Prevot Terris, as well as observe the coaches and work directly with the campers under the supervision of Gettler and Terris. The fee for Maestro Academy is $250 per week.
TO REGISTER: The Full-Day camp fee is $250 for one session or $425 for both sessions. For the Morning campers age 6-7, the camp fee is $150 for one session or $250 for both sessions. A $125 non-refundable deposit is due with your application by June 1st for the first session and July 1st for the second session. The balance may be paid upon your arrival to camp. Late applications will be accepted if space is available, with a $25 late fee. Lodging for campers is available on a first-come, first-serve basis with some of our local fencers.
